Clicksuite 360 BLOG:OUT 360 VIEW OF INTERACTIVE MEDIA

March 03, 2009

Given my declaration of love for LED based installations in my bio, it seems entirely fitting that my debut blog for Click Suite should be on said topic.

Recently I stumbled across 'LED throwies'.

Simply take an LED, a cell battery, a rare earth magnet and mix well. You now have the tools for some very pretty, urban graffiti. You can watch a video of them in action here.

This idea has been circulating for a couple of years now and is the work of New York based art group Graffiti Research Lab.

What I like about GRL is their open source approach: “Dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source technologies for urban communication” they not only come up with great solutions for getting their messages heard in busy urban environments but they also encourage other artists to create their own temporary, digital street art by providing video documentation and DIY instructions for each of their projects.

And it’s clearly working; a quick search on Flickr for images tagged with throwies harvests over 3,000 results.

Power to the people.

Opens siurce is a very good way to make some nice design because the person can use their skill and do some good modification to the script to come out with somethign new.
