Clicksuite 360 BLOG:OUT 360 VIEW OF INTERACTIVE MEDIA

March 20, 2009

Recently I have been researching large-scale digital displays. Here are three memorable examples:

Aarhus By Light took place in Denmark, early 2008.

The entire facade of the Concert Hall became the home for this large interactive piece involving small LED based creatures that looked to be living inside the walls of the building.

Using sensors on the path outside the hall, visitors and pedestrians could then become a part of the work with their silhouettes appearing on the display where they could interact with the creatures.

In Torino, Italy, local design studio ToDo created this stunning site-specific piece entitiled “Artifical Dummies” where "flocks of weird-looking animals come to life, gather together and fly around the projection space, exploring the new territory they're living in…”

And finally, the work of Australian based artist Craig Walsh:

This series of work focuses on transforming architectural sites into habitats or ‘spaces for the organic’:

In ‘Classification Pending’ mythical creatures appear beneath the surface of the Bremer River in Ipswich, Australia; in Incursion:37:20:15.71" N - 121: 53:09.51 giant vines take over the bottom two floors of the city hall in San Jose; and in Incursion 43:38:36.19N/79:25:19.89W (pictured) the store front of the Great Hall, Toronto turns into a gigantic aquarium, complete with over-sized fish.

What unites these pieces is not just their undeniable beauty, but also that they move beyond the screen - I guess you could say that they aim to think outside the rectangle. They are also site-specific and blend seemlessly into the original landscape. Their ability to 'surprise and delight' stems from working within the environment into which they are set and not apart from it.

They are also great examples of what can happen when imagination and technology collide.

Luv it.
