January 29, 2009

This month Dopplr blew me away with their report on my travel habits.

Dopplr is "an online service for smarter travel."

Having a young family I don't travel often, but when I do share my travel plans on Dopplr with friends and industry colleagues.

In January, Doppr delivered to my email a personal annual report, showing where I travelled and my resulting carbon footprint.

Some interesting facts from my 2008 travels.

  • The 5 most popular cities in my network were Auckland, Wellington, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.
  • My personal velocity for 2008 was 2.61km/h, which is about the same as NASA's crawler.
  • The furthest distance I travelled was to Wellington (10,865 km from San Francisco), which is the 153rd most popular city on Dopplr.

The shortest distance I travelled was to Paraparaumu Beach (46 km from Wellington). I actually do this trip every week day! At the moment Dopplr won't allow me to enter recurring (e.g. daily or weekly) trips but they say it's something they're considering adding in the future.

You can download the annual report built for Barack Obama.

Here's my report:

Matt Biddulph, the Nomadic CTO of Dopplr, and designer Matt Jones will be speaking in Wellington at Webstock on 16-20 February 2009. We hope to see you there!
