November 18, 2008

Our final day came around and after spending much of the night before listening to the thwock thwock of the discoteque next door, the tired cyclists got on our bikes and headed out in the POURING rain. Hence, not so many photos today, and you'll see the rain theme coming through on them - complete with an appearance on the lens of at least one photo!

We did a great 75kms before lunch, but do take note of the highlight for the day - the photo of the woman over a large steaming pot, and the next one of me (yes that's me in the yellow poncho with my rain smeared glasses on the end of my nose - it was the only way I could see!) chowing down on hot steaming corn. WOW! That certainly fuelled the next 40kms! Evidently the road side stalls sell freshly cooked corn to passers by all day, they certainly did a good trade on this rainy day. One benefit from the rain was that there was less traffic when were on the main road - though always plenty of kids on bikes - who love to try and race us up a hill - hardly fair when we have gears!

We were in less remote areas today, so finding the "nature happy room" (see Day 2 for an explanation) was challenging, but at least there were no leeches. (Yes, to come away from a nature happy room stop and find leeches on your ankles and knees, does make you wonder where else you should check!)

After lunch we bused for about 100kms, and rode the last 10kms into the beach destination of Nha Trang. More crazy traffic, but we are very adept at that by now! We were also riding into an oncoming typhoon, according to our guide, so the sea was not its usual beautiful blue. Rather, we saw a turbulent brown swirl.

The day finished with cocktails and a superb dinner right by the beach, we simply couldn't have dreamt of a better ending. Who cares about the weather - we cycled 430 kilometers in rain, sun and accompanied by thousands of smiles. What more could you ask for.
